Foraging Tours

Goochland, Virginia

Spend a Sunday in the woods.

Guided mushroom foraging tours on our 65-acre farm. Three hours in the forest with Steve, extensive knowledge on native plants and fungi, and a chance to explore our farm - for anyone curious enough to look down at the forest floor and wonder what's growing there.

Foraging on the Haashrooms farm

What you'll actually do.

You'll meet at our event pavilion equipped with a restroom and seating while everyone arrives, then walk into the woods with Steve. Over the next three hours you'll learn how to identify the species growing on the property: chicken-of-the-woods on oak stumps, lion's mane on dying beech, reishi at the base of hardwoods, turkey tail everywhere; and you'll learn what each one is good for.

Not to mention the endless edible native plants you will learn about along the entire trail. The point of our mushroom hunts is to learn how to see the forest the way a mycologist sees it.

The day, hour by hour.

Tours run on Sundays, spring through fall.

9:30 AM

Arrive at the farmhouse

Aim to arrive at 9:00 AM. Park in the lot at our event pavilion. Prepare for our hike and meet Steve and the rest of the group.

10:00 AM

Into the woods

Walk to the trailhead. Steve explains what we're looking for and how to spot it. We move slowly — the goal is learning to see, not covering ground.

11:00 AM

Hands-on identification

Stop at a clearing. Steve breaks down every species we've found — spore prints, taste tests (where appropriate), look-alikes, medicinal vs culinary uses.

12:00 PM

Head Back To The Shop

Make our way back to the shop from the forage. We will pass by our chickens, grow room, and lab. You will be thinking to yourself: "I will never see the forest the same again!"

12:30 PM

Shop visit & wrap-up

Shop our extensive variety of products back at the event pavilion, ask Steve any final questions, hug the farm dog, head home.

Common questions.

Do I need any experience? +
None at all. Most of our guests have never identified a mushroom in their life. Steve teaches from the ground up — by the end of the tour you'll know how to spot, identify, and (when appropriate) harvest your first wild mushrooms.
What should I wear and bring? +
Closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting muddy (hiking boots ideal), long pants for tick protection, a layer for cool mornings. Bring a water bottle and a phone or camera if you want to photograph.
What if it rains? +
Light rain is actually perfect — mushrooms love wet weather. We forage in rain. Heavy thunderstorms or severe weather and we'll reach out 24 hours ahead to reschedule. Full refunds available for weather cancellations on our end.
Are kids welcome? +
Yes — kids 8 and older are welcome. Younger than 8 by arrangement. Foraging is a great activity for curious kids — there's a lot to point at, smell, sketch, and ask about.
Where exactly is the farm? +
We're in Goochland, Virginia — about 30 minutes west of Richmond and 90 minutes from DC. Full address and parking instructions sent in your booking confirmation email.
Can I keep what I find? +

We ask that you leave what you find in the woods where it was. Our goal with these hunts is to educate without disrupting the land, especially with a large group.

What's your cancellation policy? +

We do not issue refunds for mushroom hunts, except weather-related cancellations from our end are always fully refunded. If you need to reschedule, please contact us and we will if we’re able to fit you into a future date at no extra cost.

Are gift cards available? +
Yes — gift cards are available for any tour. We'll email a printable PDF certificate to you, and the recipient can book whatever date works for them. Valid for 12 months.
